An aerial (helicopter) tour over the Pra River Basin, which covers the Central, Western, Eastern, and Ashanti Regions of Ghana has shown some devastating impact of illegal mining otherwise known as Galamsey on the various water bodies in the country.
According to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the visit was to ascertain the progress of the ongoing operation to protect the country’s water bodies and forest cover from the activities of illegal miners.
The images however suggests there is more to be done in the fight which started a couple of years ago.
The Minister Samuel A. Jinapor called on Residents to help him, the President and government curb the illegal mining menace. He also pleaded with them to form Associations to help them obtain the needed support from the government. “You must also plant trees after your mining operations to protect our rivers and increase our forest cover”, he added.
