Exclusive Summit: Women Leaders in African Election Management Gathering in Accra

On August 5th and 6th, 2024, Accra will open its gates to host a significant gathering of women chairpersons from eight African Election Management Bodies (EMBs). 

This event, organized under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme’s Regional Service Centre for Africa, aims to foster peer support and enhance leadership among women in electoral management across the continent.

Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana and President of the Executive Committee of the Association of African Election Authorities (AAEA), will lead the event. 

This gathering marks a pivotal moment in advancing gender equality in electoral governance. The participating countries include Cape Verde, Liberia, Ethiopia, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Objectives of the Meeting

According to Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairman of Operations at the Electoral Commission of Ghana, the primary aim of the meeting is to establish a continental network of senior electoral administrators. 

This network, specifically for women, is designed to foster peer support and collaboration among women in leadership roles within Election Management Bodies. Tettey emphasized that this platform will facilitate the sharing of experiences, strategies, and best practices to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of election management across Africa.

The meeting will also focus on reviewing international and regional norms promoting women’s political participation. By addressing the challenges and barriers women face in political and electoral processes, the participants aim to advocate for policies that enhance women’s representation and participation in these areas.

Collaborative Efforts

This event is supported by International IDEA, the Association of African Election Authorities, and the Electoral Commission of Ghana, with additional backing from the UNDP’s Regional Service Centre for Africa and the United Nations Electoral Assistance Division. These organizations provide essential technical assistance and capacity-building for African Election Management Bodies. International IDEA, committed to global democracy support, has been crucial in organizing this meeting, aiming to strengthen democratic institutions in Africa through collaboration with the AAEA and the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
