Thailand’s Youngest Prime Minister: Paetongtarn Shinawatra Takes the Helm Amid Political Uncertainty

In a monumental development, Thailand has elected its youngest-ever prime minister. The new prime minister is 37-year-old Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the daughter of billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra. On August 16, Paetongtarn was elevated to the nation’s highest office, making her the second female prime minister and the third member of the influential Shinawatra family to hold this position.

Her election is a milestone for her family and Thailand as she becomes the youngest leader since the country became a constitutional monarchy.

Paetongtarn’s election comes at a tumultuous time, with the country facing economic challenges and political instability. Her rise to power was swift—just two days after the Constitutional Court ousted previous prime minister Srettha Thavisin for appointing a Cabinet minister with a criminal conviction.

This decision is part of a broader struggle between the military-backed pro-royalist establishment and populist parties associated with the Shinawatra family.

Despite the challenges, Paetongtarn expressed optimism about her new role. “I really hope that I can make people feel confident. I hope to improve the quality of lives and empower all Thais,” she said after the vote. Her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, called to congratulate her on her achievement, expressing his happiness at her victory.

Paetongtarn’s rapid ascent to power is both a reflection of her family’s enduring influence and a bold gamble in a country where political stability is often elusive.

Analysts have noted the risks associated with her appointment. “The Shinawatras’ gambit here is risky,” said Nattabhorn Buamahakul, Managing Partner at Vero Advocacy. “It puts Thaksin’s daughter in the crosshairs and a vulnerable position.”

Tiitipol Phaddeewanich, a political scientist at Ubon Ratchathani University, added, “There is a possibility for her (Paetongtarn) to fail, and that is a big risk for the entire Shinawatra dynasty.”

As the youngest prime minister in Thailand’s history, Paetongtarn’s leadership will be closely scrutinized, not least because of the long shadow cast by her father. Thaksin Shinawatra has been a towering figure in Thai politics for over two decades, known for his populist policies that garnered immense support among the rural populace but provoked fierce opposition from the country’s elites.

Although ousted by a military coup in 2006 and later going into self-exile, Thaksin’s influence remains potent, with many wondering how much it will affect his daughter’s governance.

Known in Thailand by her nickname “Ung Ing,” Paetongtarn entered politics in late 2022 after managing the hotel arm of her family’s business empire. Her swift rise to the top is a testament to the powerful Shinawatra legacy, but it also highlights the deep divisions in Thai society. As she steps into this new role, Thailand’s youngest prime minister faces a daunting task: steering the nation through a period of significant political and economic uncertainty.
