Calling a Ghanaian politician, be it the occupant of the lowest position in the political ladder or an elected representative of the people, a Member of Parliament, without the title, “Honourable” could pass as breaking the highest law of the land which could warrant a very unfriendly response.

However, a former Deputy Minister of Communications under the John Dramani Mahama administration, Victoria Hamah feels uncomfortable about the title.

The Minister who was sacked by former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama in November 2013 over a $1 million claim in a leaked tape in a post on Facebook revealed why she prefers to be addressed by her name rather than the title, Honourable.

In the said post, she wrote;

“I don’t like it when people call me Honourable kraa. I keep repeating that I’m not an MP and never been so I’m not an hon. Just call my name.”

In 2013, former Deputy Communications Minister Victoria Hammah was sacked after she was recorded allegedly saying she would stay in politics until she made $1m.

The conversation also made mentions of other public officials and politicians linked to all kinds of corrupt practices.

“If you have money then you can control people,” she seems to have said on the tape which was widely circulated.

Victoria Hammah currently runs a non-profit organisation for women – Progressive Organisation for Women’s Advancement (POWA).
