A total of 12,758 people died from HIV/AIDS in Ghana in 2020.

This is according to the Director of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation at Ghana AIDS Commission, Kyeremeh Atuahene, PhD.

Speaking on the GTV Breakfast show, Kyeremeh Atuahene, PhD. revealed there were 346,120 HIV recorded patients in Ghana with about 52 people getting infected a day.

Although the numbers are alarming, Kyeremeh Atuahene asserts the situation in Ghana shows a downward trend taking into account the prevalence, new infections and AIDS-related deaths.

“In the last five years, we’ve been able to reduce new infections by 14%, AIDS deaths by 17% and the prevalence is still below 1.7% which is quite important. As of the end of 2020, the adult prevalence—the proportion of the population aged 15 to 49 who live with HIV—was 1.68%,” he said.

According to him, the commission was committed to fighting the menace and wishes to eliminate AIDS by 2030 and achieve epidemic control.
