0 265

Imagine growing up in a world where every aspect of your life is a lie, crafted by the person who is supposed to protect and care for you. When Gypsy Rose Blanchard was born, few could have imagined the dark journey that awaited her at the hands of her mother.

At the time of Gypsy’s birth, her mother and father had already separated leaving her mom as the primary parent in her life. Tragically, Clauddine Blanchard’s Munchausen syndrome by proxy drove her to torture her daughter till she eventually snapped and orchestrated her murder.

 Deception Begins

From the time Gypsy was born, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard started making false claims about her daughter’s health. Starting with sleep apnea when Gypsy was a baby, the stories grew more serious and complicated the older Gypsy got.

By the time Gypsy was just eight years old, Dee Dee was presenting her daughter as a frail child suffering from leukemia, muscular dystrophy, and other severe conditions.

The result? An endless parade of medical appointments, surgeries, and medications—all for ailments that didn’t exist.

Twisted Care: The Reality of MSP

Munchausen syndrome by proxy is a psychological disorder marked by attention-seeking behavior by a caregiver. This is what drives Dee Dee Blanchard’s behavior and relationship with her daughter Gypsy.

With this condition, Dee Dee’s attention could only be filled by seeking medical care for her child who isn’t actually sick. This is not only a psychological disorder that affects the caregiver but is recognized as a form of abuse on the ward by some psychologists.

She continuously sought medical help for Gypsy’s fabricated illnesses, often making her daughter’s life significantly worse. She manipulated doctors, exaggerated symptoms, and even induced medical conditions in Gypsy, all to maintain the façade of being a devoted and caring mother and fill her need for attention.

Relocation and Charitable Exploitation

In 2005, Dee Dee’s deceit took a new turn. She moved them to Missouri, using Hurricane Katrina as an excuse to get rid of old medical records and generate funds.

The family received support, including a new home from Habitat for Humanity and free trips. Dee Dee used the tragic situation to keep up the story of being a caring mother and to avoid suspicion.

Dee Dee’s behavior elicited sympathy from the community, leading to significant public assistance and charitable contributions.

In reality, Gypsy had lived a suffocating life. She had only attended school until the second grade and was forbidden from making friends or leaving the home without her mother present.

People Get Suspicious

Even though various people they came across were suspicious, Dee Dee managed to avoid getting caught.

In 2008, a doctor suspected Dee Dee might be lying but didn’t report it because there wasn’t enough proof.

In 2009, an anonymous caller suggested to authorities that Dee Dee’s medical claims were dubious. A brief investigation failed to expose the truth as Dee Dee skillfully deflected the scrutiny.

The Breaking Point

The façade finally began to crack as Gypsy approached adulthood and she became far less amenable to her mother’s manipulation. In 2011, she attempted to escape with a man she had met at a convention, but Dee Dee tracked them down and physically restrained her.

Dee’s control escalated in a bid to prevent further escape attempts. In 2015, aged 24, Gypsy’s desperation to be rid of her mom’s torment peaked and she had her killed in June.

The Facilitator: Nicholas Godejohn

Some years prior to that fateful day she would meet the man who’ll enable break free of her mother. In 2012 she met Nicholas Godejohn on a Christian dating website and were in a strictly online relationship till 2015 when they arranged an in-person meeting.

Gypsy hoped he could meet Dee Dee and she would approve of their union, of course, it didn’t go as she had hoped. Dee Dee forbade them but they continued to date in private and Gypsy stewed in anger expressing the idea of killing her mom to Nicholas.

The Fateful Day

On the morning of 9th June 2024, Godejohn travelled to the Blanchard home, where Gypsy was to notify him when her mother had fallen asleep. After receiving the signal, he entered the home, and Gypsy handed him a knife to carry out the act. Gypsy went into the bathroom leaving Godejohn who stabbed Dee Dee multiple times, photos of which have recently hit the web.

Following the murder, the couple attempted to flee but were soon apprehended by law enforcement. In November 2018, Godejohn was tried for first-degree murder. During the trial, Gypsy testified against him, detailing her involvement in the plan and her experiences of abuse.

The Aftermath

After killing Dee Dee, Gypsy and Godejohn fled to Wisconsin, where they were eventually caught. Gypsy’s online posts, including a chilling message about Dee Dee’s death, ensured that the murder was discovered.

In 2016, Gypsy pled guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. She was released on December 28, 2023, having served 85% of her sentence. As the assailant, Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
