South Africa’s status as the ‘Country-in-Focus’ at the 2024 Puebla International Literature Festival (PILF), scheduled to take place from October 4-6 in Puebla, Mexico, has been abruptly withdrawn.

The festival, organized by the Africa Center Mexico, originally planned to celebrate South Africa’s rich cultural and literary heritage in its maiden edition. However, recent controversies have led to the revocation of this designation.

What Does It Mean to Be a ‘Country-in-Focus’?

At the Puebla International Literature Festival, being named a ‘Country-in-Focus’ is a prestigious honor. It means that the nation will receive special emphasis throughout the event, highlighting its culture, arts, literature, and other significant contributions.

In July, PILF announced South Africa as the ‘Country-in-Focus’ for its 2024 edition, a significant choice for a festival aimed at bringing together renowned authors, emerging writers, literary enthusiasts, and cultural specialists from Africa, Latin America, Europe, and Asia.

However, on Thursday, the festival’s director, Ikenna Okeh, released a statement announcing the revocation of South Africa’s designation. The statement was met with widespread reactions, both supportive and critical.

The Controversy Surrounding Chidimma Adetshina

The decision to revoke South Africa’s status comes in the wake of a controversy involving Miss South Africa contestant Chidimma Adetshina. Adetshina, a law student at Varsity College in Sandton, South Africa, withdrew from the pageant scheduled for August 10, 2024, at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria.

Her withdrawal followed intense scrutiny over her citizenship and eligibility, which had become the center of a heated debate on xenophobia and national identity in South Africa.

Adetshina, born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother, was among the Top 30 contestants before her exit. The Department of Home Affairs in South Africa announced that preliminary evidence suggested her mother may have committed fraud, further complicating Adetshina’s position.

Puebla International Literature Festival Stands on Justice and Equality

In its statement, PILF made it clear that featuring South Africa as the ‘Country-in-Focus’ would compromise the festival’s commitment to justice, equality, human dignity, and the core values upheld by literature. The festival also rescinded the invitations of South African guests.

“We regret to announce the decision to rescind South Africa’s designation as the Country-in-Focus for this year’s festival and also to rescind the invitation of our South African guests,” the statement read. “This decision has been made after careful consideration of recent developments that have deeply troubled the African community.”

The statement further emphasized that the victimization of Chidimma Adetshina and members of immigrant communities in South Africa undermines the very principles of justice and equality that literature seeks to uphold.

Despite the revocation, PILF reaffirmed its commitment to supporting South African writers and thinkers working towards positive change. The festival emphasized that its decision was not a rejection of the country’s rich literary heritage or the contributions of its talented writers, poets, and artists.

“We believe literature can challenge the status quo, speak to authority, and give a voice to the voiceless,” the statement read. “However, we cannot, in good conscience, honor a country as a focal point of our celebration when it is currently embroiled in such profound injustices.”

As of now, PILF has yet to announce a new ‘Country-in-Focus’ for the 2024 festival. The decision to revoke South Africa’s status underscores the complex interplay between cultural recognition and ethical responsibility. It also raises important questions about the role of international festivals in addressing and responding to political and social issues.

Reactions and Implications

The decision has ignited a flurry of reactions on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter). Some South Africans expressed indifference or disdain for the festival’s decision, while others supported the move as a necessary stance against the injustices taking place in their country.

While these reactions reflect a mix of national pride and frustration, the broader implications of this decision on South Africa’s literary community are still unfolding.
