Former President Donald Trump ignited a firestorm of controversy at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Forum when he made a provocative claim about Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity.
Trump asserted that Harris had “transitioned” from being Indian-American to Black American, implying that she had somehow switched or abandoned her Indian heritage.
Trump’s Comment
“I have known her a longtime indirectly, not directly very much and she was promoting only Indian heritage, I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she turn to be Black and now she wants to be known as Black. So I don’t know if she is Indian or Black,” Trump said.
The comment was met with swift criticism and confusion, as Harris has consistently and proudly identified as both Indian-American and Black American, reflecting her multiracial heritage.
Harris’s mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was of Indian descent, while her father, Donald Harris, is of Jamaican ancestry.
Trump’s remark was widely seen as an attempt to question Harris’s identity and authenticity, sparking a wider conversation about identity politics and the complexities of multiracial identity in America.
Critics accused Trump of trying to erase or diminish Harris’s Indian heritage, and of perpetuating harmful stereotypes about multiracial individuals. This has divided the American citizens as many have thrown in their support for Harris.
