It’s been over two decades since Michael Jordan last laced up his iconic Air Jordan sneakers and took to the court, but his legacy continues to soar.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, in February 17,1963, but grew up in Wilmington, Michael Jordan’s athletic prowess was evident from an early age. He excelled in baseball, football, and basketball at Emsley A. Laney High School in Wilmington, North Carolina.

His hard work earned him a scholarship to the University of North Carolina, where he led the Tar Heels to a National Championship in 1982.
The Portland Trail Blazers selected Sam Bowie with the second overall pick in the 1984 NBA draft, leaving Michael Jordan for the Chicago Bulls to snatch up with the third pick. It was a fateful decision that would change the course of basketball history.
Before his rookie season, Michael Jordan signed a groundbreaking endorsement deal with Nike, which would become a defining aspect of his brand. The now-iconic Air Jordan 1 sneakers were initially banned by the NBA because they didn’t conform to the league’s uniform requirements.
But Jordan wore them anyway, and the controversy only fueled the shoes’ popularity.
As a rookie, Jordan averaged 28.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists and and 2.4 steals per game, earning him the NBA Rookie of the Year award. He quickly became the face of the Bulls franchise, leading them to their first playoff appearance in over a decade.
